Issue 80 • January 2022

As we come to the end of the year, we revisit the shipping container shortage that has been a staple in the headlines, looking at the impact the Christmas-induced surge in demand has had, and what the solutions are to avoid the shortage in the future. As well as this, we learn about new maritime tech company Seafair, and how their platform can help with seafarer recruitment.

Looking to fuels, there has been a lot of conversation recently around finding more efficient, and less polluting solutions – a problem more important to solve now than ever with the climate crisis in mind. We found out how blockchain can help combat fuel fraud, ensuring the source of fuel is legitimate. We also look at ammonia-based fuel as a future solution, which although boasting green credentials, has raised some concerns.

And, in our cover story, we look at the pledges made by the world's leading retailers to use zero-carbon ships by 2040 for their shipping. Although this is good news for the environment, we ask the skeptical question: is it too little, too late?

For all of this and more, read on. And don't forget to stay up to date with everything at @ShipTechMag.
