Issue 76 • May 2021

International shipping was at the forefront of the worldwide news agenda after the Ever Given container ship became stuck in the Suez Canal for five days – causing the biggest tailback of cargo ships the world has ever seen. But while the queue has subsided, another international shipping crisis has emerged.

As the rest of the world still reels from the pandemic, China has bounced back so strong that the economic powerhouse has caused a shortage of international shipping containers. We take a look at how this has impacted the UK, and analyse the options shipping giants have available.

The Tuas Mega Port project is progressing on track, and is well on its way to making Singapore the site of the largest port in the world. We have an exclusive chat with the chief engineer, who revealed the first of four phases of the project is set to open later this year.

Elsewhere in this issue, we take an in-depth look at the green future of ship propulsion, speaking to BAR Technologies about its pioneering scheme to offset 30% of CO2 emissions. We also analyse the world’s first tanker powered solely by batteries.

Don’t forget to follow us @ShipTechMag and let us know your thoughts on my maiden issue at the helm.
